As road trip lovers, we always look for new scenic routes to explore. This time, we decided to revisit a road we had already traveled but could never get enough of—the breathtaking backroads of St. George.
Our weekend getaway took us through a picturesque stretch from Cedar City to Littlefield, weaving through mountains, valleys, and charming small towns.
Scenic Road Options to St. George
There are a few ways to enjoy this scenic road:
You can take a route with stunning views from both directions or opt for a loop from I-15 through the mountains before descending.
Either way, this short trip is an excellent choice for motorcycle riders, hikers, and anyone who enjoys a twisty, thrilling drive through nature.
The Journey Begins: From St. George to Cedar City
Our trip began in St. George, where we hopped onto I-15 northbound toward Cedar City. The 45-minute freeway ride isn’t the most exciting, but it sets the stage for the adventure ahead.
At Exit 51, we veered off toward Newcastle, UT.
The moment we left the freeway, we were reminded of Utah’s raw beauty. As we climbed higher into the mountains, the scenery shifted dramatically.
Snow blankets the trees and mountaintops in the colder months, creating a winter wonderland. Even in warmer seasons, the rolling hills, cattle farms, and endless open spaces make for a mesmerizing drive.
Newcastle: A Step Back in Time
Roughly 20 minutes later, we arrived in Newcastle, a tiny town where time seemed to stand still. Aside from admiring the quiet farm life and refueling at the lone gas station, there’s not much to do here.
But sometimes, pausing in a peaceful town like this is the perfect reminder of the simpler joys of life.
The real adventure begins when you take a left turn toward St. George.
The Twists and Turns of the Less Traveled Backroads
The drive from Newcastle toward Gunlock is what makes this road trip unforgettable. The road winds through the mountains, taking you from snowy peaks down into lush valleys where rivers and greenery thrive.
It’s an exhilarating experience, especially for motorists who love a good set of twisty roads.
On weekends, you’ll often find fellow adventurers—bikers, car clubs, and trailers—all soaking in the scenery. Every turn offers a new, awe-inspiring view, making it impossible to rush this drive.
Before you know it, you’ll find yourself in the small town of Gunlock.
Gunlock: A Hidden Gem with a Lakefront Escape
The name Gunlock might sound intimidating, but don’t be fooled—this tiny town is as welcoming as they come.
Surrounded by natural forests, Gunlock is home to a stunning lake, a perfect spot for a quick break.
Recently, developers have added tiny lakefront homes, making it a great place for an overnight stay.
If you’re an outdoor lover looking for a serene escape, this is an excellent choice. There’s also an RV park, and when the weather allows, you can even take a dip in the lake’s refreshing waters.
After taking in the peaceful surroundings, we continued toward Santa Clara.
Santa Clara: A Growing Outdoor Paradise
Just 20 minutes later, we reached Santa Clara, one of the fastest-growing communities in Southern Utah. With its abundance of parks, bike lanes, and walking paths, Santa Clara is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The town is packed with Airbnb’s and themed vacation homes, making it an excellent spot for weekend getaways. And let’s talk about the food—Santa Clara’s food scene is incredible, with diverse options that cater to every craving. It’s a destination worth visiting on its own.
A Pit Stop Worth Taking: Hive 4Three5 Tap House
Before calling it a weekend, we couldn’t resist stopping at Hive 4Three5 Tap House in St. George. This local brewery is a must-visit, offering fantastic craft beers, a lively atmosphere, and top-notch service.
We sampled the Bohemian Brewski Draft and Silver Reef Agua Diablo—both were refreshing and packed with flavor. To pair with our drinks, we indulged in their house pretzel, beet salad (out of this world!), and bacon, smoked Gouda & green chili pizza.
An Alternative Route: The Scenic Way Back to Las Vegas
If you’re heading back to Las Vegas and want to squeeze in a few more scenic miles, take a right turn just before entering St. George.
This road runs through the Shivwits Band of Paiutes Reservation, offering a stunning alternative to the usual I-15 route.
Freshly paved with smooth asphalt, this road is a dream to drive.
Surrounded by striking red rock formations, it’s a series of picture-perfect turns that transport you through some of Utah’s most breathtaking landscapes.
Unlike the main highway, this route is peaceful, with minimal traffic—perfect for those looking to escape the mundane freeway experience.
Eventually, this road leads back to I-15, just before you cross into Arizona and Nevada. But before heading home, we made one last stop.
A Final Detour: Overton, NV
No road trip is complete without an unexpected detour. On our way home, we spontaneously stopped in Overton, Nevada. It is a charming small town that deserves more recognition.
Its historic sites and local businesses make it a great place to explore before wrapping up your adventure.
Until the Next Ride…
There’s something magical about taking the scenic route. Whether it’s the breathtaking landscapes, hidden gems along the way, or the thrill of the open road, this trip through the backroads of St. George was unforgettable.
