For years, I had heard whispers of Moab’s reputation as an off-road paradise, a hidden gem for adventurers seeking rugged trails and breathtaking landscapes.
Yet, despite the allure, I never found the opportunity—or perhaps the courage—to embark on the journey.
That all changed when my group of off-road enthusiasts decided it was time to make the dream a reality.
We set out for a weekend that would leave an indelible mark on my memory.
Our adventure began with a scenic route via Bryce Canyon from Las Vegas to Moab, UT.
The drive was an experience, passing through stunning landscapes, dramatic red rock formations, and awe-inspiring views that set the tone for the weekend ahead.
The scenic route allowed us to stop at overlooks, marvel at Bryce Canyon’s amphitheaters, and appreciate the vibrant interplay of light and shadow on the rocks.
The contrast between the sprawling desert and the dramatic cliffs was unforgettable, providing a prelude to Moab’s rugged beauty.
The journey from Las Vegas to Moab takes approximately seven hours and covers over 450 miles of diverse scenic terrain.
Although the route through Bryce Canyon takes a bit more time, it rewards travelers with some of the most awe-inspiring views in the region.
Moab: Where History Meets Adventure
Arriving in Moab, we checked into the Homewood Suites, a comfortable base for our adventure.
There are plenty of Airbnb options for those looking for a unique stay, ranging from quaint cabins to modern homes with breathtaking views of the red rock landscape.
Moab is a small town with a big personality. It is known for its dramatic red rock landscapes, proximity to iconic national parks, and rich history.
Originally a trading post for Native Americans, Moab became a hub for uranium mining in the 20th century, drawing prospectors and adventurers to its rugged terrain.
Today, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering everything from hiking and biking to off-road adventures and river rafting. Its vibrant downtown area is filled with local shops, galleries, and eateries, creating a perfect blend of adventure and charm.
Unleash Your Inner Explorer: Moab Off-Road Adventures
We started the day early by picking up our 4×4 vehicles from Twisted Jeep Rentals.
Having rented Jeeps from various companies during past trips, we’ve learned—the hard way—that Twisted Jeep Rentals is the best option for serious off-road adventures. Unlike other companies, Twisted doesn’t restrict access to 70% of the trails, so you can truly explore the rugged beauty of Moab.
The Twisted team gave us a thorough briefing, ensuring we felt confident about our route and the vehicle’s capabilities.
For those less confident in their off-road driving skills, Moab also offers guided tours in Hummers.
These tours provide a thrilling ride-along experience with a professional driver, ensuring you can enjoy the adventure without the stress of navigating challenging terrain.
The guides are also well-versed in the area’s history and geology, adding an educational element to the adventure.
Trail Tales: Chicken Corners Adventure
Our first trail was Chicken Corners, a relatively easy route that offered breathtaking views of mountains, rivers, and wide-open landscapes.
The trail winds along a ledge, with sheer drops adding an element of thrill to the journey.
Along the way, we stopped at overlooks that provided panoramic views of the Colorado River, which snaked through the canyon below.
The morning sun illuminated the red rock formations, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors.
Chicken Corners is accessible for beginners but offers enough excitement to keep experienced drivers engaged.
The variety of terrain—from sandy stretches to rocky paths—made every mile unique.
Each turn brought new surprises, whether a hidden alcove, a natural arch, or a glimpse of wildlife like lizards and birds adapted to the desert environment.
Fear of Heights? I didn’t know I had one Until…
The Shafer Trail, a switchback-laden dirt road carved into the cliffs, was a heart-pounding highlight. Driving along its narrow, winding path gave us an adrenaline rush and provided panoramic views of the surrounding mesas and river-carved valleys.
Every photo we took looked like a Jeep commercial, with dramatic backdrops and picture-perfect moments around every turn.
Top of the World: An Elevated Adventure
Before heading to Canyonlands, we embarked on the renowned Top of the World Trail, a challenging route that rewards perseverance with breathtaking views of Moab.
The ascent was thrilling and technical, with rocky terrain demanding careful navigation. As we climbed higher, the world below seemed to stretch infinitely, with layers of red rock mesas and winding canyons.
At the summit, we experienced a moment of pure awe. The aptly named trail offered a panoramic view that felt like standing on the edge of the earth.
We unpacked our brunch while enjoying the unmatched scenery.
The calmness of the high-altitude setting and the grandeur of the surrounding landscape made this meal unforgettable. It was a perfect pause before continuing our adventure.
By the end of the day, we were exhausted but filled with the satisfaction of an incredible off-road experience.
BBQ Bliss at The Blu Pig
After an exhausting day of off-road adventures, we headed to The Blu Pig for dinner. This cozy spot is known for its BBQ, bluesy vibe, and relaxed atmosphere.
The aroma of smoked meats filled the air, and the menu offered various options, from tender brisket to savory pulled pork.
The portions were hearty, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. Live music added to the ambiance, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our weekend.
Canyonlands Trail: A Journey Through the Sky
The next day, we ventured onto the famed Canyonlands Trail, which offers an unparalleled perspective of Utah’s vast and rugged beauty. Canyonlands National Park, divided into districts like “Island in the Sky” and “The Needles,” offers a mix of challenging trails and breathtaking overlooks.
One of the most unforgettable stops along the trail was Mesa Arch, a short hike that led to a stunning natural arch perched on the edge of a cliff. The morning sun illuminated the arch’s underside, creating a glowing frame for the expansive landscape beyond. This spot is a favorite among photographers and adventurers, and it’s easy to see why.
The Canyonlands Trail also introduced us to unique geological features, including towering spires and hoodoos that seem to defy gravity.
At one point during our exploration, we decided to make a quick stop and admire Mother Nature. The stillness of the moment, paired with the expansive vista of red rock formations and the distant shimmer of the Colorado River, made for an unforgettable experience.
It reminded us of how even a simple stop can become extraordinary in the right setting. Wildlife sightings were another highlight, with deer, hawks, and even a curious fox appearing.
Standing on the edge of vast plateaus, with the world stretching endlessly below, was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.
Mastering Hell’s Revenge
The next morning, we set out for Hell’s Revenge—one of North America’s most iconic off-road trails.
This trail is not for the faint of heart. The terrain is challenging, with steep rock inclines, slick rock surfaces, and narrow ledges that demand precise driving skills.
The path traverses petrified dunes, offering views of the La Sal Mountains.
Full disclosure: I left the driving to someone more experienced, but the thrill (and fear) was gutwrenching even as a passenger. Each climb and descent felt like a rollercoaster ride, with adrenaline levels peaking at every turn.
Hell’s Revenge is famous for obstacles like Hell’s Gate and Tip-Over Challenge, which require technical skill and nerves of steel.
Navigating these sections as a spotter or passenger is an intense experience, even if you’re not behind the wheel.
The views from the trail’s highest points were breathtaking. Below, you could see a sprawling vista of canyons, mesas, and the Colorado River.
After a day filled with sweat, scrapes, and tears, we ate dinner at Sunset Grill. Perched on the side of a mountain, this unique steakhouse offers incredible views of Moab below.
As we dined on perfectly cooked steaks and decadent desserts, we watched the sunset paint the town in hues of gold and crimson. The food and atmosphere were exceptional, providing the perfect end to a day of intense adventure.
Arches National Park Awaits
On our final morning, we packed our bags, enjoyed our last cup of coffee in Moab, and headed out to Arches National Park.
Arches National Park is one of Utah’s Mighty Five. Known for its stunning natural arches and dramatic landscapes, the park is a must-see.
We explored popular trails, such as Delicate Arch, a challenging but rewarding hike to one of the park’s most iconic landmarks. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and La Sal Mountains.
Balanced Rock was another highlight, showcasing a precariously perched boulder that defies gravity.
The park’s Windows Section provided a more accessible trail, with multiple arches visible from a short walk.
The contrasts between the red rocks and the deep blue sky created an otherworldly atmosphere that felt almost surreal.
Tips for visitors: arrive early to beat the crowds, bring plenty of water, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. The park’s trails vary in difficulty, so plan your route based on your fitness level and time available.
The Journey Home: Moab Memories
After an unforgettable weekend, it was time to head back. This time, we took the faster route via I-15, reflecting on the incredible memories we’d made.
The journey home felt bittersweet. Although we left Moab’s rugged beauty behind, we carried with us stories and experiences that would last a lifetime.
Moab is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that will leave you in awe of nature’s beauty and your adventurous spirit.
