Chow Mein House: A No-Fuss Local Favorite

Variaty of dishes at Chow Mein House in Summerlin

Some days don’t call for experimenting or chasing the latest hype — they call for a reliable, crowd-pleasing meal that everyone agrees on. This past Tuesday, sandwiched between school pickup and afternoon activities, we went with the ultimate no-brainer lunch: Chinese food. The kids were unanimous, and after striking out twice before due to a packed dining room, we figured we finally cracked the code. After school is the sweet spot.

That’s how we found ourselves at Chow Mein House in Summerlin, with most of the dining room to ourselves and just enough time to settle in before the dinner rush started rolling through.

A Summerlin strip-plaza gem that knows exactly what it is

Chow Mein House sits in a busy Summerlin plaza not far from Red Rock Canyon — an area packed with dining options, fitness studios, and everyday errand stops for locals. It’s conveniently located next to Rolling in Dough Bakery and just one block off Vintner Grill, making it an easy stop whether you’re running errands or already in the neighborhood for a meal. It doesn’t try to stand out with flashy décor or trend-chasing concepts, and honestly, that’s part of the charm.

Their slogan says it all: “Authentic Flavors, Local Vibes.” No gimmicks, no reinvention — just familiar Chinese favorites done well, served quickly, and priced for repeat visits. From the moment you walk in, it’s clear this is a place built for locals, not tourists.

A touchscreen ordering station near the entrance hints that a big portion of their business is takeout — and that tracks. This is exactly the kind of spot you’d swing by on the way home from work or grab dinner when cooking feels like a stretch. But despite the strong to-go presence, the dining room is comfortable, casual, and welcoming for those who want to sit and enjoy their meal.

Easy service, relaxed pace, and zero pressure

We were seated right away, and our server was friendly, accommodating, and genuinely easy to talk to. Everything came with a smile, and service moved at just the right pace — quick enough for a weekday lunch, but never rushed.

It felt like the kind of place where the staff knows many of the regulars by name, and even as first-timers, we were treated like familiar faces. That relaxed, approachable energy goes a long way, especially when dining with kids.

Family-style ordering is where Chow Mein House shines

One of the underrated joys of Chinese food is how easy it is to order for the table. Everyone gets to share, sample, and circle back to their favorites — something you can’t always do with other cuisines. We leaned fully into that approach and ordered all the classics.

What we ordered

Fried wonton strips with sweet & sour sauce

Before the main dishes even hit the table, we were snacking on crispy fried wonton strips served with sweet and sour sauce. Light, crunchy, and dangerously easy to keep reaching for, they set the tone perfectly while we waited for the rest of the spread.

Orange chicken

A certified crowd-pleaser, and for good reason. The chicken was crispy without being heavy, coated in a bright, tangy orange sauce that hit that sweet-savory balance just right. This one disappeared fast — always a good sign when kids are involved.

Mongolian beef

Tender slices of beef, savory sauce, and just enough richness to make it stand out from the rest of the table. It paired especially well with the fried rice and was one of those dishes you keep coming back to for “just one more bite.”

Sesame chicken

Slightly sweeter than the orange chicken, with a glossy sesame sauce that felt familiar in the best way. Another solid, comforting option that delivers exactly what you want when you order it.

Fried rice

A must-order when sharing. Simple, well-seasoned, and the perfect base to scoop up bits of everything else on the table. It tied the whole meal together.

Chow mein noodles

Soft noodles with just the right chew, lightly sauced and easy to pair with every protein we ordered. This dish lived up to the restaurant’s name and anchored the meal in classic comfort.

Portion sizes made for sharing (and leftovers)

The portion sizes were generous without being overwhelming — ideal for family-style dining. Everyone got their fill, we sampled a bit of everything, and still felt like we could’ve taken leftovers home if we wanted to.

Most importantly, the kids loved it. No complaints, no picking around the plate — just clean dishes and requests to come back again. That alone earns major points.
