SoulBelly BBQ: Date-Worthy BBQ in the Arts District

SoulBelly BBQ in the Arts District

When you’re craving BBQ but still want a place that feels like a chill date spot, SoulBelly BBQ in the Arts District delivers. From the laid-back patio shared with HUDL Brewing to the fast service and flavorful meat combos, this place makes casual dining feel intentional and fun.

Outdoor Patio, Shared Beer Garden Vibes

SoulBelly’s patio is one of its biggest draws. It opens directly onto the shared space with HUDL Brewing Company, creating an open, urban-style hangout zone. Long wooden tables, string lights, and the smell of BBQ smoke in the air—it’s a setting made for kicking back and digging in.

We dropped by around 1 PM on a warm afternoon and chose to sit outside. The vibe was relaxed—quiet, with couples and small groups posted up at tables, cold drinks in hand. Inside, the stage was set for live music, even though no one played during our visit. According to staff, they often host blues artists, adding to the spot’s easygoing energy.

There’s a big BBQ smoker right up front, so you get hit with that irresistible aroma as soon as you walk up. The patio setup makes it easy to grab a drink from HUDL and bring it over to your table.

I asked if they did flights at SoulBelly, and the staff let me know I could get a beer flight next door and still enjoy it with our food here.

“I ended up going with a Mango Cart since the HUDL line looked a little long, but the setup couldn’t be more convenient.”

Starting Strong with Loaded BBQ Fries

We started with the Loaded BBQ Fries, a mountain of wedge-cut fries topped with cheese, sour cream, spicy BBQ sauce, brisket, tobacco onions, and scallions. It was messy in the best way—gooey, crunchy, savory, and big enough to split.

The brisket chunks were tender, and the BBQ sauce added just enough heat without overpowering everything else. If you’re coming hungry or just want to share something indulgent, this appetizer hits all the right notes.

1-Meat Combos with Big Flavor

For our mains, we both went with the 1-Meat Combo, which comes with one pit item, a side, bread, and housemade bread & butter pickles.

I chose the Bourbon Glazed Pork Belly with Mac & Cheese. The pork belly was ultra-soft, with a sweet glaze that caramelized on the edges and melted in your mouth. The mac & cheese had a crunchy top layer made from chicharron and parmesan crumbs, giving every bite texture and richness.

“The pork belly was insanely soft, and the glaze had just the right touch of sweetness. This is the kind of BBQ that makes you stop mid-bite just to appreciate it. Destony’s ribs basically fell apart when she picked them up. That’s when you know they’re doing it right.”

Destony got the St. Louis Pork Ribs, which were fall-off-the-bone tender. You barely needed the knife. Like mine, she paired her combo with the mac & cheese, and neither of us regretted doubling up on that side.

The whole combo plate setup works especially well for couples. You get to try a little of everything, customize the sides, and swap bites back and forth. It makes the meal feel fun and shareable without being over-complicated.

Other Pit Picks

If you’re planning a return visit—or just want to mix and match—SoulBelly’s meat lineup includes:

  • Brisket
  • Carolina Pulled Pork
  • Smoked Turkey
  • Smoked Portobellas
  • Hatch Chile & Cheddar Pork Hot Link
  • Bratwurst

Each combo can be customized with a side, so whether you’re into smoky, spicy, or savory, there’s something for every BBQ mood.

Bold Drinks & A BBQ Twist

SoulBelly’s drink game doesn’t disappoint. Destony ordered the Strawberry G&T, made with Sipsmith Strawberry Smash Gin, elderflower tonic, freeze-dried strawberries, and pink peppercorn. The color was as pretty as the flavor—crisp and floral with a little bite.

I kept it classic with a Mango Cart, which paired perfectly with everything from fries to pork belly. Whether you’re into beer, cocktails, or something in between, there’s plenty to sip on while you wait for the food (which isn’t long at all).

“Destony’s Strawberry G&T looked like summer in a glass—bright, colorful, and playful. The flavor had layers: fruity and floral at first, then a soft peppery finish from the pink peppercorns. It was the kind of drink you could sip slowly and still wish it wouldn’t end.”

Desserts You’ll Want to Come Back For

We were full by the end, but next time, we’re definitely trying the desserts. Options include banana pudding, Oreo cheesecake, and Blue Bunny ice cream cups. They’re simple and classic, just like the rest of the menu. Based on how great everything else was, the sweets are probably worth saving room for.

Chill Vibes, Quick Service, Solid Date Spot

What really stood out—besides the food—was how fast and friendly the service was. Even though the patio was filling up, our food came out quick, and every interaction felt easy and low-key.

The Arts District backdrop adds to the charm. It’s a walkable neighborhood filled with art, breweries, and interesting storefronts, making SoulBelly a natural part of a bigger day out. Whether you’re starting your afternoon here or ending it with BBQ and music, it just works.

“SoulBelly is kind of perfect for a casual date—good food, good drinks, and a space where you don’t feel rushed. Just sit, relax, and enjoy.”

Taste Southern Style at SoulBelly BBQ

If you’re looking for a BBQ spot that works just as well for couples as it does for families or friends, SoulBelly BBQ should be high on your list. The meat is on point, the drinks are thoughtful, and the overall experience is relaxed and fun.

Come for the fries, stay for the pork belly—or the ribs. Either way, this is one of those places where the setting matches the flavor, and both are worth coming back for.
