MacKenzie River Pizza Is Henderson’s Ultimate Hockey Lunch

Lunch plans don’t usually start with hockey.

We were looking for somewhere around the Water Street District to grab a bite as a family when we ended up at MacKenzie River Pizza Grill & Pub inside the America First Center. We knew we’d get lunch. What we didn’t expect was spending the afternoon watching youth hockey from our table while enjoying burgers, pizza, appetizers, and a local draft beer.

It’s one of those places that’s difficult to compare to anything else around the Las Vegas Valley. Instead of staring at televisions showing sports, you’re watching the real thing unfold just beyond the restaurant’s massive windows. Parents cheer on their kids during games, families gather after practice, and even if you simply stopped in for lunch like we did, it’s hard not to get pulled into the action.

MacKenzie River Pizza isn’t just attached to the rink. The hockey becomes part of the dining experience.

One of Henderson’s Most Unique Lunch Spots

Located above the ice inside America First Center, MacKenzie River Pizza feels modern the moment you walk inside. The restaurant features tall ceilings, dozens of televisions, a large central bar, comfortable seating, and plenty of space for both families and larger groups.

Then you notice the windows.

Stretching along one side of the restaurant, they overlook the rink below, giving diners an uninterrupted view of practices, public skating sessions, and youth hockey games.

As someone who’s always been a hockey fan, this immediately grabbed my attention.

Throughout lunch we found ourselves watching the game just as much as we were talking at the table. It gives the restaurant an energy that most sports bars simply can’t recreate.

Perfect For Families Spending the Day at the Rink

It didn’t take long to realize why this restaurant stays busy.

If your kids play hockey, figure skate, or are taking skating lessons, MacKenzie River Pizza solves one of the biggest problems parents usually have: waiting around.

Instead of sitting in the lobby or wandering outside, you can order lunch, grab a beer, and still keep an eye on everything happening on the ice.

Even for people who aren’t involved with hockey, it makes for an entertaining backdrop while you eat. Watching kids celebrate goals, hearing the sounds from the rink, and seeing families cheer from the stands creates an atmosphere that’s both lively and surprisingly relaxing.

A Burger That Absolutely Delivered

I ordered the Rise & Shine Burger with garlic parmesan fries and an Atomic Duck draft from Able Baker Brewing.

The burger comes topped with brown sugar bacon, crunchy fried jalapeños, a fried egg, cheddar cheese, pickles, and served on a brioche bun.

It arrived cooked exactly how I like it, a perfect medium rare, and it was incredibly juicy from the first bite to the last.

The brown sugar bacon added just enough sweetness without overpowering everything else, while the fried jalapeños gave every bite a satisfying crunch. Even the pickles stood out, bringing enough acidity to balance the richness of the burger and egg.

The garlic parmesan fries were another highlight. Crispy, well-seasoned, and loaded with flavor without becoming greasy.

Pairing everything with an Atomic Duck made for an easy lunch I’d happily order again.

A Thin Crust Pizza We Didn’t Expect to Love

My fiancée ordered the Thai Pie, one of MacKenzie River Pizza’s signature thin-crust pizzas.

It’s topped with Thai peanut sauce, seasoned chicken, mandarin oranges, scallions, red peppers, peanuts, mozzarella, and finished with fresh cilantro.

Reading the ingredients, it sounds like a combination that shouldn’t work.

Somehow, it absolutely does.

The peanut sauce gives the pizza a rich, savory base while the mandarin oranges brighten every slice with little bursts of sweetness. The peanuts add another layer of texture, making every bite different from the last.

It’s one of those specialty pizzas that’s memorable because it’s willing to be different without trying too hard.

The Thai Pie sounded like the biggest gamble on the menu, but it ended up being one of everyone’s favorite dishes.

Two Appetizers We’d Order Again

Her dad chose the Southwest Rolls, lightly fried spring rolls filled with chicken, spinach, black beans, corn, red bell peppers, and pepper jack cheese, served alongside southwest ranch.

They were crispy on the outside with a warm, flavorful filling that packed in plenty of texture. The southwest ranch complemented the rolls nicely without overpowering the ingredients inside.

Her mom ordered the Boom Boom Shrimp, featuring crispy breaded shrimp drizzled with the restaurant’s boom boom sauce and finished with fresh scallions.

The shrimp stayed crispy despite the sauce, which leaned more toward sweet and tangy than overwhelmingly spicy. It was another easy crowd-pleaser that disappeared quickly around the table.

Don’t Overlook the Patio

After lunch we stepped outside onto the restaurant’s patio overlooking the Water Street District.

It’s a completely different atmosphere from the rink side of the restaurant.

Instead of hockey, you’re looking over one of Henderson’s fastest-growing entertainment districts, making it a great place to enjoy lunch on a nice day or grab a drink before exploring the area.

Between the patio views and the rink views, you really get two completely different experiences depending on where you decide to sit.

More Than Just Another Pizza Restaurant

While pizza is obviously a major part of the menu, MacKenzie River Pizza offers far more than its name suggests.

Burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, local beer, cocktails, and specialty pizzas give everyone enough variety that larger groups won’t have trouble finding something they’ll enjoy.

That became pretty obvious with our table, where everyone ordered something completely different, yet every dish was a success.

Some restaurants stand out because the food is exceptional. Others stand out because of the location.

MacKenzie River Pizza manages to combine both.

Whether you’re stopping by after skating, waiting for your kids to finish hockey practice, meeting friends for lunch, or you’re simply looking for somewhere a little different around Water Street, this is a restaurant that’s worth experiencing.

Between the perfectly cooked burger, the surprisingly addictive Thai Pie, the excellent appetizers, and an afternoon spent watching hockey from our table, it’s the kind of lunch that ends up being about much more than just the food.

We’ll definitely be back, especially the next time we want to catch a game with a burger and an Atomic Duck in front of us.
