Discover O.Onigiri: Authentic Okinawan Rice Bowls

O.Onigiri Brings Okinawan Rice Bowls to Chinatown

Hidden among the busy restaurants of Shanghai Plaza, O.Onigiri specializes in Okinawan comfort food that’s both simple and satisfying. The Everyday Vegas team stopped by for lunch to try several of the restaurant’s popular donburi bowls and see what makes this Chinatown spot stand out.

Located in one of the valley’s busiest food destinations, O.Onigiri specializes in Okinawan-style onigiri and donburi bowls. While many people are familiar with traditional Japanese triangular rice balls, O.Onigiri focuses on a version that originated in Okinawa, featuring rice, egg, protein, and flavorful toppings packed into a convenient and satisfying meal.

For this visit, the team skipped the onigiri sandwiches and focused on the restaurant’s donburi offerings.

A Quick Stop Inside Shanghai Plaza

Shanghai Plaza has become one of the most exciting food destinations in Las Vegas. The center is packed with restaurants, dessert shops, and specialty concepts that draw crowds throughout the day.

O.Onigiri occupies a compact space inside the plaza with a bright, casual dining room. The walls feature colorful artwork inspired by Okinawan culture, while menu boards showcase everything from specialty onigiri creations to rice bowls and appetizers.

The atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming, making it a great spot for a quick lunch break.

The Everyday Vegas Order

The team placed a straightforward order centered around the restaurant’s donburi bowls.

What Is Donburi?

Donburi, often shortened to “don”, is a popular Japanese rice bowl dish that combines steamed rice with a variety of toppings such as grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, and flavorful sauces. At O.Onigiri, the Donburi bowls offer a hearty, comforting meal inspired by Japanese and Okinawan flavors, making them a popular choice for a quick and satisfying lunch.

I ordered the Grilled Salmon Teriyaki Don.

The bowl comes with steamed rice topped with two grilled salmon fillets glazed in teriyaki sauce. It is finished with shiso furikake and sesame seeds and served alongside pickled radish and ginger.

Esther ordered the exact same thing.

Motty went with the Beef Bulgogi Don.

This bowl includes steamed rice topped with grilled beef bulgogi and sautéed white onions. It also comes with two pork gyoza, kimchi, ginger, sesame seeds, and green onions.

Ronnie chose the Chicken Katsu Don.

His bowl featured crispy chicken katsu served over rice with katsu sauce, sesame seeds, pickled radish, ginger, and two pork gyoza.

Grilled Salmon Teriyaki Don

The salmon bowl immediately stood out because of its presentation. The fillets were generously sized and coated with a glossy teriyaki glaze that added sweetness without overwhelming the fish.

The salmon itself was tender and flaky, pairing well with the steamed rice underneath. The pickled radish added brightness while the ginger helped balance each bite.

It was a simple dish, but one executed well.

“The salmon was exactly what I wanted for lunch. It was filling without feeling heavy, and the teriyaki glaze worked really well with the rice.”

Beef Bulgogi Don

Motty’s Beef Bulgogi Don offered a completely different flavor profile.

The beef was savory and slightly sweet with plenty of seasoning throughout. The addition of kimchi brought heat and acidity, while the pork gyoza helped make the bowl feel even more substantial.

The green onions and sesame seeds added freshness and texture, creating a balanced combination from start to finish.

Among the three bowls on the table, this was probably the most flavor-packed option.

Chicken Katsu Don

Ronnie’s Chicken Katsu Don delivered exactly what fans of Japanese comfort food would expect.

The breaded chicken maintained a crispy exterior while remaining juicy inside. The katsu sauce added sweetness and richness that paired perfectly with the rice underneath.

The gyoza served alongside the chicken made the meal feel even more complete.

It was a straightforward combination that worked well and offered a satisfying alternative to the salmon and bulgogi bowls.

What Makes O.Onigiri Different?

While the donburi bowls impressed the team, O.Onigiri’s real specialty remains Okinawan-style onigiri.

Unlike traditional Japanese onigiri, which is typically formed into triangles and wrapped with seaweed, Okinawan-style onigiri often resembles a sandwich. Layers of rice, egg, spam, seafood, meats, and other ingredients are stacked together to create a portable meal that has become a staple throughout Okinawa.

The concept has grown increasingly popular throughout the United States, and O.Onigiri has become one of the most recognizable places in Las Vegas to try it.

Even though we focused on donburi during this visit, the menu makes it easy to understand why the restaurant has developed such a following.

A Solid Chinatown Lunch Spot

Las Vegas Chinatown continues to be one of the city’s most exciting dining districts, and O.Onigiri adds something unique to the mix.

The restaurant offers flavors that aren’t commonly found elsewhere in the valley while keeping the experience casual, approachable, and affordable.
