Sometimes the paved roads just don’t cut it—especially when adventure calls. If you’re ready to put your vehicle’s grit to the test, the rugged path to Kingman Wash is the perfect place to start.
Tucked just 30 minutes from Las Vegas and sitting right beside the iconic Hoover Dam at the edge of Lake Mead, this hidden beach feels like its own little world.
Getting there requires navigating over three miles of dirt, rocks, and sandy stretches, making it an ideal trek for trucks and 4x4s.
Still, don’t let the terrain deter you—this secluded escape is well worth the journey.

Although Lake Mead may not be at the water level it once was, the natural beauty of the surrounding area is still a sight to behold, especially considering its proximity to Vegas and the city’s hustle and bustle.
A quiet exploration is exactly what we all need now and then—a chance to recharge our batteries and reset for whatever comes next.
Reaching New Heights at Kingman Wash
The ride was incredibly bumpy, making it difficult to take any videos or pictures. However, most travellers on this road are extremely respectful of space and understand that not everyone knows how to drive off-road like a pro racer.
Despite the bumpiness, the views of the Arizona mountains are breathtaking.
Each mountain has a stunning formation, and every color it beholds only adds to the story each formation tells about itself.

To see these ancient formations, we rode and rode, and finally got to the wash itself, where the locals greeted us!
Friendly Tenants
Admittedly, these locals weren’t regular people, but donkeys! As we parked and set up our station to make burgers and hot dogs right next to our truck, these friendly donkeys immediately came to greet us.

Those donkeys are very accustomed to people; it seems that most of them are very open to being petted. However, anyone should proceed with caution when studying their demeanor before deciding if petting them is the right option.
Natural Beauty Everywhere
Not going too far, we ventured to a nearby hill composed of pure sand and dirt. We did find a higher vantage point to scope out the area a bit more and get some even more breathtaking views of the wash and the mountains that stand over it.

All that sand we just walked up on was once all underwater, including some algae that can still be seen in the sand itself. Despite this, the area remains beautiful and vibrant.
Not including the donkeys that greeted us, the area is home to crows, a variety of fish, coyotes (beware), and some roadrunners that have been spotted in the vicinity.
Due to the presence of these animals in the area, the natural beauty, and the convenient location, camping is absolutely perfect!
Camping with friends or family seems to be a perfect mini-venture to take for the weekend. It especially becomes lively when Independence Day rolls around, apparently as a visitor explained to us.
Hot Dogs & Burgers, Oh My!
We struggled a bit to make food, as the donkeys at this point expected us to give them food, with all six donkeys we saw surrounding us at one point.
We powered through and made a few hot dogs for ourselves, as well as some burgers, which we hurriedly prepared as the donkeys seemed very interested in them. (Donkeys are vegetarian, so it is not recommended to feed them any meat.)
The sun started to set, our tummies were full, and our grill was all out as we set out on the long journey through the bumpy dirt road, but a small detour had to be made to a very iconic American monument.
Walking The Dam
Since we were only 30-40 minutes away from Vegas, we passed straight by the Hoover Dam, which we decided to visit briefly.
Although it was getting dark, we were still able to park and take a walk around the Dam. Basking in its history and stopping along its many historical marks, it holds true throughout its almost 100-year history.

As we walked through the Dam, we were reminded that, whether manmade or natural, beauty can take many different forms and shapes. Natural beauty is something we must conserve and maintain, not just for our enjoyment and weekend getaways with loved ones, but also for the sake of future generations.
But for the sake of the wildlife that roams the area and has been inhabiting it for hundreds of years, as well as the beautiful rock formations that hold billions of years of knowledge we could only dream of knowing.
Kingman Wash was not only a relaxing visit, but also a very educational and eye-opening spot to see – a sight to behold, for sure!
