A recent Las Vegas Academy graduate just became a Broadway star in the making. Chris Hayes stepped onto the national stage at the Jimmy Awards—and walked away with the top prize, marking a first for Nevada.
Las Vegas Teen Takes Broadway by Storm
Chris joined more than 100 student performers from around the U.S. at the Jimmy Awards for a full week of rehearsals, coaching sessions, and Broadway workshops. He trained with top actors, directors, and vocal coaches before performing on the big stage.
The Jimmy Awards is a national competition celebrating the best high school musical theatre performers across the United States.
Each year, top students from around the country gather in New York City to compete, learn from Broadway professionals, and showcase their talent on a big stage. The awards recognize outstanding acting, singing, and inspiring educators who support young performers.
His performance stood out to the judges, earning him first place and a $25,000 scholarship to support his future in the arts. After being announced as the winner, Chris gave an emotional speech that touched hearts.
“I love you guys so, so much,” he said. “None of this could have happened without you guys. And I’d like to say hi to all of my friends back home. I love you guys all so much, too.”
The Coach Behind the Curtain
Chris wasn’t the only Nevadan honored that night. Elena Ferrante-Martin, director of performing arts at Bishop Gorman High School, received the Inspiring Teacher Award.
Given to only two teachers each year, the award recognizes educators who have made a lasting impact on their students and school communities. Elena, who also serves as Chris’s vocal coach, was praised for her passion, mentorship, and guidance.
Her recognition adds another reason for Nevada’s performing arts scene to celebrate.
A Second Act for Marie Muñoz
Nevada’s spotlight didn’t stop with Chris. Marie Muñoz, a fellow student from Bishop Gorman High School, returned to the Jimmy Awards for her second year. She’s now the first actress from Nevada to compete two years in a row.
“Walking in this year and meeting all of the new nominees and experiencing new coachings,” said Marie in an interview with KTNV. “Not only do I have last year to help motivate me and have that in my toolbox, but I feel like now I can really stop and smell the roses.”
A Standing Ovation for Nevada
With Chris’s historic win, Elena’s national recognition, and Marie’s return to Broadway’s biggest student stage, Nevada had a night to remember.
These young performers and their teachers showed the country the heart, talent, and dedication coming out of Las Vegas. “Now that I’ve done it once, I can really actually enjoy the experience of the Jimmy Awards,” said Marie.
That joy was shared by everyone who watched these stars rise.
